Through rigorous academic program offerings, internationally recognized research, and extensive public outreach and engagement, Appalachian strives to position itself at the forefront of STEM education and activities in North Carolina. The goal of this site is to serve as a central landing spot for all things related to STEM including programs, engagement opportunities and resources for various audiences.
The acronym STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics) has been in use since the 1980s, although the concept has taken on new economic and curricular interpretations in recent years. This site draws on a multi- and inter-disciplinary interpretations of STEM and is inclusive of all disciplinary approaches to any of the STEM fields, including the social or cultural contexts of them.
